Abstract

In April 2012 a new system for trauma management was introduced in England. Major trauma cases were now to be transported directly to one of 22 major trauma centres that could provide a total care package rather than the nearest emergency department, and supporting regional trauma networks were created. This required that robust triage criteria be introduced under the guidance of regional clinical advisory groups. Continuing data collection, through TARN (Trauma Audit and Research Network https://www.tarn.ac.uk/) monitors the effects of these changes to confirm the early positive results apparent after just 2 years. The next stage to review and improve rehabilitation services nationally will require even greater cooperation and integration of services across networks.
