Abstract

Arthrogryposis is a congenital, non-progressive disorder that is not a single pathology, but rather a collection of conditions of varying aetiologies that are characterized by joint stiffness and contractures affecting at least two different areas of the body. In this article, we will review the aetiology of the condition, look at the various factors implicated in its pathogenesis and outline its classification and natural history. We will discuss the philosophies of treatment of this potentially debilitating condition, and the value of a multi-disciplinary team setting. Readers should gain an insight into the challenges faced in management of this condition and better understand the indications and timing for intervention.
