Abstract
The motion segment is the functional unit of the spine. Understanding the function and pathological dysfunction of this structure is the key to managing spinal symptoms and disease. The anatomy, normal ageing processes, and abnormal degeneration will be discussed with the appropriate imaging and the patterns of clinical disease.
