Abstract

Total knee arthroplasty implant systems are numerous and differ in morphology, kinematic function, fixation, and biomaterials. This article discusses the most pertinent literature regarding high-flexion, mobile bearing and gender designs, bi-cruciate retaining TKA, PS and CR designs, anterior-lipped and ultra-congruent bearings, cementless fixation, highly cross-linked and vitamin-E polyethylene, and patella resurfacing. At this point in time, it remains difficult to substantiate that one particular implant design is superior to another, likely due to the currently available outcome measures not being sensitive enough to discern clinically meaningful differences.
