Abstract

There are certain scenarios in shoulder arthroplasty in which cementless fixation has a widely accepted role, including glenosphere fixation in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty and humeral head surface replacement arthroplasty. However, there has been some debate regarding fixation of humeral components, especially in total shoulder arthroplasty, because early prosthetic designs and surgical techniques showed inferior results when cementless humeral component fixation was used. Recent advances in implant design and surgical techniques have led to improved clinical results with uncemented humeral components. Thus, there is an established role of cementless fixation of humeral components in total shoulder arthroplasty and hemiarthroplasty.
