Abstract
Total knee arthroplasty is extremely effective in the treatment of knee arthrosis; however, there is no consensus regarding a gold standard articulation. Traditionally, fixed-bearing knees have been implanted with excellent clinical outcomes and survival rates. Rotational-bearing knees have been advocated to improve the clinical outcomes and survivorship on the basis of theoretic advantages. The purpose of this review is to explore the differences between rotational- and fixed-bearing designs in the key areas of wear, survivorship, clinical outcomes, kinematics, complications, and cost. In summary, the theoretic advantages of rotational-bearing knees have not been realized in clinical studies.
