Two-Stage Exchange for Infected TKA—Affirms

Infection after total knee arthroplasty remains a potentially devastating complication with substantial consequences. Despite the apparent insecurities relating to the care of an infected arthroplasty, a generalized algorithm has evolved over the last decade that optimizes the diagnosis and treatment of patients with this complication. Several large patient series have demonstrated approximately a 90% success rate when treating infections with a two-stage exchange, which is superior to most series evaluating the results of direct exchange. Two-stage exchange for infected total knee arthroplasty has become the treatment of choice for most joint arthroplasty surgeons in the United States.
