Abstract
Anterior and lateral approaches to the spine have an increasing role in addressing deformity, tumor, and degenerative conditions of the spine. When conducted by an experienced team and supportive care system, anterior and lateral approaches to the spine can be performed safely, with few complications and good to excellent patient outcomes and satisfaction. A thorough knowledge of vascular, neural, and visceral anatomy is essential in minimizing approach-related complications.
