Abstract
Total disc replacement has been, and will continue to be, an exciting development in the treatment of back pain patients. Results from FDA-regulated clinical trials have been promising. The long-term results from Europe have also been favorable. However, as with any surgery, adherence to strict selection criteria is essential to achieving a predictable surgical outcome. The purpose of this review was to provide an understanding of the indications and contraindications for lumbar total disc replacement.
