Abstract

ResumenToxoplasma gondii es un protozoo intracelular con elevada prevalencia mundial. La primoinfección en inmunocompetentes puede producir linfadenopatía cervical con microgranulomas, sin necrosis ni células gigantes. En inmunodeprimidos y recién nacidos de madres infectadas durante el embarazo puede producir meningoencefalitis necrosante y afectación multivisceral, donde el microorganismo es visualizado fácilmente.Material y métodoSe revisaron los hallazgos anatomopatológicos de los casos de toxoplasmosis del Hospital La Paz (1967-2010).ResultadosSe encontraron 78 casos diagnosticados de toxoplasmosis: 32 necropsias (16 toxoplasmosis congénita y 16 adultos con sida) y 46 biopsias (entre ellas 35 linfadenopatías).ConclusionesSe describen los hallazgos anatomopatológicos de una serie amplia de toxoplasmosis. La linfadenopatía tipo Piringer-Kuchinka y la encefalitis fueron los cuadros más frecuentes.

Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular protozoa which is highly prevalent worldwide. Infection in immunocompetent patients may produce subacute cervical lympadenopathy, with microgranulomas and absence of necrosis or giant cells. Immunocompromised adults and newborn infants with congenital toxoplasmosis, due to maternal infection during pregnancy, can suffer necrotizing encephalitis and visceral lesions. In these cases T. gondii is usually found.Material and methodsAll cases with a diagnosis of toxoplasmosis found in the data bases from the Pathology department of La Paz Hospital (Madrid) between 1967 and 2010 were reviewed.ResultsSeventy eight cases of toxoplasmosis were confirmed: 32 from autopsies (16 congenital toxoplasmosis and 16 HIV-positive patients) and 46 from biopsies (35 lymphadenopathies and 6 encephalitis).ConclusionThe pathological findings in a large series of cases of toxoplasmosis are described. Piringer-Kuchinka lymphadenitis and encephalitis were the most frecuently encountered conditions.
