Abstract
Thyroid biopsy obtained with a sonographically guided needle is a more specific and sensitive alternative to fine needle aspiration cytology, according to several authors. This article presents a critical review of the methodology for obtaining the sample, its optimal management in the pathology laboratory and how and what can be diagnosed as well as the reasons for what can not be not be diagnosed. The best results of this technique are obtained when the specialists involved cooperate on a multidisciplinary committee to discuss complex cases.
