Abstract
SummaryIt is now clear that coeliac disease (CD) is common in children with a prevalence of 1:80–1:300. The clinical presentation has changed and the majority of children manifest non-specific or mild symptoms. The accuracy of serological methods has increased and targeted serological screening of children with conditions associated with CD is leading to the detection of more relatively asymptomatic cases. The diagnosis of CD still requires upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and small bowel biopsy, and management revolves around a lifelong gluten-free diet to avoid long-term complications.
