Abstract
SummaryChronic lung disease (CLD) of the premature, also known as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), is a disease of multifactorial aetiology that primarily affects premature infants. The management of these infants requires a multidisciplinary approach, and is largely supportive. The focal points in the care of these infants are the optimisation of respiratory care and nutritional status. This review presents management strategies for CLD and the supporting evidence. Although significant progress has been made in caring for infants with CLD, further research is required to fully understand and prevent the disease, or at least minimise its severity.
