Abstract

Respiratory problems are very common in children with neurodisability being the most common cause of higher morbidity and death. The factors that contribute to these difficulties include poor cough and pooling of oropharyngeal sections. Gastro-oesophageal reflux, muscle weakness and development of kyphoscoliosis lead to chronic ongoing morbidity leading to recurrent infections and development of bronchiectasis. Obstructive sleep problems may require mechanical support. Common paediatric conditions such as asthma may co-exist. To optimise care of these complex children, a multidisciplinary team should include respiratory physician.
