Abstract
The purpose of the Article is to explain the respective roles of the trial judge and the medical expert in care proceedings, the circumstances under which the court requires expert evidence and the way in which it fits into the “wider canvas”. It also considers how the court system is striving to improve the way in which the evidence is received in order to avoid unnecessary demands on the valuable resource of the medical expert.
