Abstract

Over the last 20 years with the advent and increased accuracy of serological screening, there has been an increased recognition of the varied phenotype of patients diagnosed with coeliac disease. This review summarizes what is currently known about the presentation, diagnosis, treatment and consequences of this disorder. Recently published NICE guidance stress the importance of increased vigilance in testing children with recognized symptoms and asymptomatic children with associated conditions in order to decrease the burden of continued poor health and long term morbidity and mortality associated with undiagnosed and untreated coeliac disease.
