Abstract

This review article aims to provide knowledge on the epidemiology, pathology, classification, history/assessment and early management of burns in children. The current principles of management from initial assessment to early management to definitive care have been reviewed and best practice has been established. Also discussed is how to estimate the depth of burn clinically and using imaging. The criteria for referral to a burns unit are discussed along with how a burns unit immediately manages these patients. This article is designed to give GPs, junior doctors, nursing staff and anyone not familiar with burns an overview of the current opinion and management of an acute burn.
