Abstract

Professional nursing practice at Mayo Clinic emphasises nursing research as integral to professional practice and development. A commitment to nursing research at the clinic has evolved over the past 20 years with expanded resources, the implementation of a research training scholarship programme and the development of an ambitious strategic plan. Four primary goals are outlined in the strategic plan: advancing the scientific foundation of nursing knowledge and practice; providing consultation and leadership for departmental initiatives such as evidence-based practice; providing research consultation to nursing staff; and ensuring an infrastructure to build research capacity. Each of these goals and how they are being achieved and expanded is discussed. One of the independent programmes of investigation under development regards child and parent health and wellness. This programme is discussed in relation to the priority goal of advancing nursing science. The article concludes with recommendations for developing a clinically based nursing research division.
