Validación de la Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale

RESUMENAntecedentesA finales del siglo xix se observó un descenso importante de la lactancia en favor del uso de sucedáneos de la leche, con cambios en la salud infantil. Se ha intentado, sin mucho éxito, revertir esta tendencia. Un elemento determinante para la duración de la lactancia materna, es la actitud de la madre. Hay varias formas de cuantificarla. El presente trabajo ofrece la validación en español de la Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale (Escala de Actitudes ante la Alimentación Infantil de Iowa).ObjetivoValidar la Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale en idioma español.MétodoSe trata de un estudio metodológico para la validación semántica y lingüística de una escala de medición psicométrica, que mide la actitud ante la lactancia. Se llevaron a cabo un proceso de traducción doble, en inglés y español, una validación semántica, una evaluación de su valor de predicción y de su validez interna, utilizando la escala después del parto, en 136 mujeres de estrato social alto de Bogotá. Se hizo una encuesta de seguimiento seis semanas después y se logró ubicar telefónicamente a 103 (75%) de las 136 pacientes, para evaluar la duración de la lactancia y el método de alimentación hasta ese momento.ConclusionesLos resultados demuestran que la versión adaptada al español en Colombia de la Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale tiene validez para evaluar la actitud hacia la lactancia. Se requieren otras validaciones en otros contextos sociales y culturales.

ABSTRACTBackgroundA significant decrease in breastfeeding in favor of the use of milk substitutes was observed around the turn of the 20th century, leading to changes in child health. Attempts have been made to reverse this trend, but with little success. The attitude of the mother is a determining factor for the duration of breastfeeding, and there are several ways to quantify this. The present work presents the validation of a Spanish version of the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale.ObjectivesValidation of a Spanish version of the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale.MethodA methodological study was used for the semantic and linguistics validation of a scale for the psychometric measurement of the attitudes to breastfeeding. This included a double translation process, in English and Spanish, a semantic validation, and the measurement of the predictive validity and internal consistency using 136 women of a high social level and after childbirth in the city of Bogotá. A follow up telephone survey was conducted 6 weeks after childbirth to evaluate the duration of breastfeeding and the feeding method at that point in time.ResultsIn the telephone survey at 6 weeks, the women had a positive attitude toward maternal breastfeeding, independent from the way of feeding. The Cronbach alpha index was 0.704.ConclusionsThe present study suggests that the version adapted to Spanish (Colombia) of the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale can be considered valid to evaluate attitudes towards breastfeeding. Its validation needs to be carried out in other social and cultural contexts.
