Abstract
Although the assessment of any disorder is essential in informing the practitioner as to the most appropriate treatment and likely prognosis, the assessment of personality disorder is poorly carried out by many psychiatrists. this article reviews different methods of assessment and argues that any sensible interpretation of the information acquired needs to be informed by a good knowledge of personality structure. This is best provided by a systematic training with a semi-structured instrument. Psychiatric practice would be greatly enhanced if this training were provided routinely during a psychiatrist's training.
