Abstract
This contribution consists of the descriptive psychopathology and epidemiology of obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD). It describes the relationship between obsessions, safety-seeking and avoidance behaviours, compulsions and neutralizing behaviours. It introduces a psychological understanding of the factors that maintain the symptoms of OCD, and suitable assessment tools.
