Abstract
This contribution discusses the importance of clinical assessment as a phase in the treatment cycle. The settings and the levels of assessment are described. The key elements of taking a good drug and alcohol history are also covered. There are comments on key substance misuse screening questionnaires. Finally, brief alcohol interventions are described.
