Abstract
Parental psychiatric disorder can affect children's development, primarily through alterations in the quality of parenting and family interactions. This article sets out a consensus of what is meant by parenting, outlines principles and a framework for undertaking assessments of parenting, and describes a process of comprehensive assessment of parenting ability, and a structured approach to decision making about parenting capacity, which is applicable to the needs of the Family Courts.
