Tratamento do cancro do pulmão – Decisão baseada na biologia, do gene à histologia

ResumoO cancro do pulmão é a principal causa de mortalidade por cancro em todo o mundo. Apesar dos desenvol-vimentos científicos e técnicos, não tem sido possível reduzir significativamente a mortalidade. A procura de novas estratégias terapêuticas com base nas características individuais tem constituído um dos maiores objectivos da investigação na actualidade. Dificuldades na obtenção de amostras, execução em tempo útil e padronização das tecnologias envolvidas têm sido os principais obstáculos. As terapêuticas dirigidas a alvos biológicos e a quimioterapia dirigida ao doente individual são dois dos campos que potencialmente poderão, a curto prazo, determinar importantes benefícios para os doentes com cancro do pulmão.Rev Port Pneumol 2008; XIV (Sup.2): S27-S34

Lung cancer is the main cause of cancer mortality in the whole world. Until now, scientific and technologic developments didn’t reduce significantly the mortality rate. The research of new therapeutical strategies based on individual characteristics has constituted one of the main goals of the last years. Difficulties in the samples collection, execution in useful time and standardization of the involved technologies have been the main obstacles. The target therapies and the customization of chemotherapy for individual patient are two of the fields that potentially will be able, in short-term, to determine important benefits for lung cancer patients.Rev Port Pneumol 2008; XIV (Sup.2): S27-S34
