Abstract
Preoperative assessment before lung resection is based on cardiac assessment, lung function testing and prediction of the residual lung function. An exercise test would be prescribed in patients with compromised lung function. Cardiac risk assessment is based on a well validated score system. The calculation of this index is simple, since it is based on the medical history, physical examination, baseline ECG and plasma creatinine measurement. Lung function testing includes forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO) measurements. Before lobectomy, the calculation using lung segment counting can predict postoperative
