Abstract
Not all patients benefit from this strategy, either because they would not have progressed quickly after first line without maintenance therapy, or because their disease progresses rapidly despite of maintenance therapy, and there are also cases of poor tolerance of treatment. These patients represent about 45% of patients, and no objective criteria have yet been established to differentiate these patients from those that could benefit from maintenance strategy. However, age, performance status, response to first line, perception and wishes of patients concerning maintenance therapy should be taken into account before the decision to give maintenance treatment for advanced NSCLC is made.
