Abstract
Clinical and functional respiratory assessment represents a key element in the management of neuromuscular diseases. It Includes an evaluation of daytime and nocturnal symptoms, measurement of vital capacity (seated and supine), inspiratory or expiratory pressures, blood gas analysis and nocturnal evaluation. This comprehensive assessment is essential to optimize the timing of therapeutic interventions, particularly non invasive ventilation. It is also useful in the follow up to determine the rate of respiratory deterioration in an individual patient.
