Abstract
Sleep is a physiological situation particularly detrimental in patients with neuromuscular disease carrying a ventilatory vulnerability. From alveolar hypoventilation in REM sleep, to central sleep apnea, various pathophysiological mechanisms are involved in ventilatory dysfunction related to sleep. These abnormalities precede and promote diurnal respiratory dysfunction. The interest in the evaluation of ventilatory function during sleep at diagnosis is threefold: diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic. The monitoring of nocturnal respiratory function in ventilated patients can assess the effectiveness of treatment.
