Abstract
Respiratory failure in chronic neuromuscular diseases must be identified as soon as possible and managed by trained teams in order to provide the best answers to patient's specific needs. The treatment is composed of an active desobstruction and ventilatory assistance if needed. Desobruction needs expert physiotherapists, cough assistance devices and fibro-aspiration if necessary. Ventilatory assistance is mandatory in case of respiratory distress, chosing non invasive ventilation by preference, to prevent the necessity of tracheostomy. Prevention is the main part of the daily care of such patients. It needs complete information of all the relatives of the patients, about the situations and symptoms that may lead to refer to the medical team.
