Abstract
Metabolic syndrome is a major public health problem, and is a frequent comorbidity associated with respiratory disorders. Physical inactivity plays a major role in its development. There are many metabolic abnormalities including oxidative muscle deficiency and intramyocellular lipid accumulation in these patients. Exercise calorimetry is a functional test for analyzing lipid oxidation rate during exercise, and calculating the Lipox max where this rate is maximal. This investigation therefore explores muscle metabolic abnormalities, to target individualized exercise training prescription and to assess the metabolic benefits associated with exercise training. Endurance exercise training at an intensity corresponding to Lipox max is effective in improving insulin sensitivity and muscle oxidative capacity.
