Abstract
Tobacco smoking is an addiction; smoking cessation is difficult and is characterized by frequent relapses. There are effective methods of helping smokers to quit which combine pharmacotherapy with behavioural support. The role of health professionals is essential and requires the same intervention as for chronic disease. Each health professional should ask if patients smoke, if they want to stop smoking and should propose treatments to help them quit.
