Percutaneous primary placement of a retrievable self-expanding metallic stent showed superior intermediate-term results compared with percutaneous balloon dilation for the treatment of benign biliary strictures. In addition, the indwelling period of PTBD catheters can be significantly reduced using temporary stent placement.
