Abstract
Hans Beger is regarded as one of the most innovative and influential surgeons in Germany during the 20th century. His contributions, especially to pancreatic surgery, are appreciated worldwide. Operative techniques for preserving functions and organs, with the modern form of minimally invasive surgery, pathophysiologically based indications and a scientifically-based choice of procedures, a strictly standardized execution of operations, and the unsparing analysis of complications, along with the constant effort to optimize the results, all underpinned by the highest medical ethics, characterize the life and work of Hans Günter Beger. His influence on his pupils is enduring.
