Abstract
Critical shortages of qualified surgeons currently exist in many regions of Maryland, especially in rural regions. Administrative, teaching, and research activities significantly reduce the amount of time surgeons are able to devote to patient care, particularly in academic and suburban settings. Fewer surgeons are available to care for patients in Maryland, and they are significantly older than assumed in manpower databases. Access to surgical care in Maryland will be jeopardized if these issues are not considered in future health care workforce discussions.
