Abstract
► Tinnitus is exacerbated by stress and involves cochlear NMDA receptors. ► Dynorphins and salicylates potentiate glutamate effects at cochlear NMDA receptors. ► Salicylate produces tinnitus; dynorphins exist in the cochlea. ► Dynorphins released during periods of stress could exacerbate tinnitus. ► Opioid antagonism may alleviate a stress induced exacerbation of tinnitus.
