Abstract
⺠The posterior insula and medial parietal operculum are the main sensory targets of the spinothalamic system. ⺠Opercular-insular focal lesions can induce both dissociated sensory loss and central pain. ⺠The posterior insula - medial operculum can be considered as a third somatosensory area.
