Abstract
⺠Adult cochleas lack most neurotrophins while corresponding receptors are all present. ⺠All four neurotrophins are similarly effective in preserving spiral ganglion cells. ⺠Presence of all neurotrophin receptors explains similar preservative effect. ⺠Preservative effect continues after cessation of temporary neurotrophic treatment. ⺠An autocrine mechanism may explain continued preservative effect.
