Abstract
► Adult cochleas lack most neurotrophins while corresponding receptors are all present. ► All four neurotrophins are similarly effective in preserving spiral ganglion cells. ► Presence of all neurotrophin receptors explains similar preservative effect. ► Preservative effect continues after cessation of temporary neurotrophic treatment. ► An autocrine mechanism may explain continued preservative effect.
