Abstract
► We discuss the effects of auditory nerve derived spontaneous activity on synaptic transmission. ► Auditory nerve derived spontaneous activity is lost in most reduced preparations. ► Synapses in non-active preparations change their physiological state. ► Especially synaptic depression and facilitation are different in active vs. silent preparations. ► Background activity can be reintroduced into the preparation.
