Abstract
⺠We discuss the effects of auditory nerve derived spontaneous activity on synaptic transmission. ⺠Auditory nerve derived spontaneous activity is lost in most reduced preparations. ⺠Synapses in non-active preparations change their physiological state. ⺠Especially synaptic depression and facilitation are different in active vs. silent preparations. ⺠Background activity can be reintroduced into the preparation.
