Abstract
► In arid human communities of northwest Patagonia, firewood knowledge has a relevant role for subsistence. ► Twenty one species were registered, of which 18 were native and 3 exotic. ► In then two rural communities studied, purchase of other resources and use of alternative fuels to complement firewood use. ► They also recycle biological products to supplement firewood and practice forestation. ► The use of multiple fuel resources could contribute to social-ecological resilience.
