Abstract
⺠Shrubs absorbed N from lower, relatively nutrient- poor soil layers while grasses have the opposite pattern. ⺠Shrub and grass species have similar N use efficiency through opposite mechanisms. ⺠Shrubs have a conservative N economy. ⺠Grasses have a more open N economy.
