Abstract
► The cumulative fine root production and mortality were higher in the mobile sand dunes. ► Higher root production in mobile sand dune is linked to vegetative propagation and higher biomass distribution in the roots. ► The root production and longevity are consistent with the adaptive responses in two habitats. ► The differences in root dynamics and longevity explain the changes in the C fixation rate with the restoration of desert.
