Abstract
► U.S. and Canadian monitoring results show long term Great Lakes major ion changes. ► The upper Great Lakes have shown persistent increases in most ions. ► The lower lakes have shown a pattern of increase, decline and rebound for some ions. ► The results show that very long times may be required to alter water quality trends. ► The importance of long-term systematic water quality monitoring is underscored.
