Hydropower development is an effective means to resolve the energy shortage issue in China, in turncontributing to economic and social development. However, it can also result inseveral negative influences on thelocal watershed environment and human living conditions. Eco-compensation is an effective economic method of environment management that protects resources and realizessocial optimization. It is also a successfuldesign for localdevelopment because it adjustshuman activities according to available environmental resources. This studyappliedthe eco-compensation theory tohydropower development in China from an environment economics perspectiveand established aneco-compensation frameworkfor hydropower development. Three methods for standard eco-compensation calculationareput forward, all of which provide useful references to developand perfect the ecocompensation modelforhydropower development.
