Abstract
⺠The Azolla pinnata and Lemna minor are tested for purification of coal mine effluent. ⺠Both macrophytes are highly efficient in detoxification of coalmine effluent. ⺠Both macrophytes brought down concentration of metals below the permissible limits within one week. ⺠They have wide range of metal retention potential (Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr and Cd). ⺠The A. pinnata is more tolerant to CME toxicity than L. minor.
