Abstract
An assessment of environmental radioactivity in the area of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, was performed using gamma-ray spectrometry. The concentration, distribution and mutual correlations of uranium, thorium and potassium in 135 soil samples from 45 locations were determined. The mean elemental concentrations of uranium, thorium and potassium were found to be 2.52 ± 0.73 mg kg− 1, 9.40 ± 2.86 mg kg− 1 and 1.60 ± 0.40%, respectively. The results obtained were compared with equivalent values from other studies conducted worldwide.
