The need for prior information in characterizing snow water equivalent from microwave brightness temperatures

► We developed an algorithm to characterize snow from microwave brightness (Tb). ► We use a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach and minimal prior information. ► The algorithm was accurate for shallow snow, but was inaccurate for deep snow. ► Additional prior information is needed to accurately characterize deep snow from Tb.
