► Effects of global change on hydrological process were elevated in China by IBIS. ► Climate change exerted positive effects on runoff except in the southernmost regions. ► Elevated CO2 concentrations exerted positive effects on runoff at the national scale. ► LAI compensation effect dominates runoff in arid inland region. ► Stomatal closure effect dominates runoff in southern moist regions.
