Abstract
► Bacterial abundance increased in upwelled water in oligotrophic South China Sea (SCS). ► N:P ratio was >16:1 in the northern SCS and the Pearl River estuarine coastal plume. ► Phosphorus addition increased bacterial production by 20-30% in these two regions.
