Abstract
► A variational formulation of global planetary shallow water dynamics is presented. ► Noether's methodology is generalized to derive consequences of near symmetries. ► Consequences of near spherical symmetry of planetary fluid dynamics are derived. ► Integral angular momentum equations are presented for planetary fluid dynamics. ► Euler's rigid body equations are presented as a special case of our results.
