Application of laboratory experiments to assess the error introduced by the imposition of “wall” boundary conditions in shelf models

► We assess the effect of “wall” boundary conditions in numerical shelf models. ► This BC replaces the regularity requirement at the shelf's landward boundary in OGCM. ► Laboratory experiments and straightforward mathematical analysis are combined in the assessment. ► Dispersion relations and cross shelf structures of shelf wave are affected by the BC. ► It is suggested that the regularity condition should be applied in OGCMs runs.
